Tess Durbeyfield

Beckee I think you're alone on this one, which makes it hard to have a book club discussion about a book. But never fear, I read Tess back in the day. So let me flashback to high school and tell you why I won't read it again.
It's starts right at the beginning when the parson tells the local drunk:
“Don't you really know, Durbeyfield, that you are the lineal representative of the ancient and knightly family of the d'Urbervilles, who derive their descent from Sir Pagan d'Urberville, that renowned knight who came from Normandy with William the Conqueror, as appears by Battle Abbey Roll?” “Never heard it before, sir!”

Now Durbeyfield happens to be Tess's father and like all good dirty rotten scoundrels wants something for nothing and sends his better than average looking daughter off to get it for him. In the process ruining all her chances for happiness before he dies and leaving her so psychologically damaged that she will ruin the rest of her chances. She will continue this spiral of self destruction unless some outside force can somehow enter the scene and pull her from this seemingly inevitable demise. But will that outside savior appear? And if it comes, will she allow herself to be saved?

I just can't handle a slow motion train wreck, or Tom Clancy without the explosions...

November's book is Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery. Because I'm cool like that.

I am kind of with you Stephanie. I read this in high school only I never finished it then as I rarely finished any books in high school. I would however like to try and read this book this time around. I have received the book from the library, but haven't started reading it yet. I hope this week I will turn over a new leaf and start reading as well, but we will see. I have read Anne of Green Gables, but I will love reading it again.
